STR – VIE – BKK with Austrian in Premium-Eco

Since my PartnerPlus points were no longer enough for Business Class, and I’d always wanted to try Premium Economy, I flew with Austrian from Stuttgart via Vienna to Bangkok. The first leg was in Business, and the long-haul leg was in Premium Economy. There’s no longer an LH lounge in Stuttgart, so I picked up something from an airport shop. In Business Class, I had a light snack and a glass of wine. The service otherwise wasn’t that great 😏 Then I ate something in the lounge in Vienna. What surprised me was that the actual SEN lounge in Schengen apparently closes at 9:00 PM, and you were sent straight to the non-Schengen area (that was different on my last visit, and it’s not stated on the website either 🤷‍♂️). Okay, then it was off to boarding, where they tried to sell upgrades to Premium Economy, which didn’t really appeal to many, given the 450 euro surcharge from Economy. The price for an upgrade to Business was 1050 from Economy and 850 from Premium Economy (you don’t have to understand that). What I found interesting, however, was that I could have upgraded my award flight too 😳 (I thought that wasn’t possible, but it was too expensive for me and Business was fully booked anyway…). Now for Premium Economy. There’s more space and you can recline your seat far enough back that your head doesn’t fall forward while you sleep. However, it’s almost impossible to get out of the row if the two people in front of you do that. The food is a bit better than in Economy and you get a digestif 🤭 I would book it normally too 🙄 I don’t think so, especially given the current prices of 1500-2000. The difference to Economy is too small for that, and Business is simply much better!
