Muar was more of a chance discovery via Google while I was sitting in Sao Nam. The restaurant itself is almost unrecognizable as such, very unassuming. But after a few dishes on the menu intrigued me, I went and didn’t regret it. There was butter kailan (fried vegetables), then the crispy egg with rice, and otak-otak. The vegetables were seasoned with onions and garlic and had a certain sweetness. The egg was like a poached egg, except crispy on the outside. The otok is a steamed fish cake that was quite spicy. When you put everything together, it was incredibly delicious. There was also good homemade herbal tea to drink. A complete contrast to yesterday’s steakhouse. When you consider that it only cost a tenth of the price, you almost want to eat it alone (and there were no tourists in there).
